Time to Say Goodbye to President Dr. Mathana Santiwat
When I decided to join the Bangkok University over 30 years ago, I, like many of you, found the academic excellence to be a major attraction. Dr. Mathana Santiwat was then the Assistant VP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Thanu Kulachol was the VP for Academic Affairs and Dr. Charoen Kanthawongs was the President of our university.
Throughout my years with Bangkok University, I had the privilege of being enlightened, inspired and motivated by Dr. Mathana rich academic experienced who acted as a coach and like a loving big sister to me. During that era of Bangkok University challenging constraints, we have less than 10,000 students in our city campus but we work very very hard together as a dedicated team, as a family, for the enthusiastic pursuit of the academic excellence which never abated. Today, I am proud to say, we have more than 27,000 students in our 2 campuses and is the oldest and largest private university in Thailand, established 1962, because of this our selfless teamwork. I am most honored to have the opportunity and privilege to be part of this team mention here.
When Dr. Thanu Kulachol retired 6 years ago, Dr. Mathana assumed the position as the third President of Bangkok University and the most gratifying aspect of her superlative achievements has been the benefit to the faculty members as well as the students. We can, without reservation, say that our university attracts the best and the brightest, most highly motivated students because of our stellar academic reputation and the quality of its talented faculty. The University offers unparalleled learning experiences and collaboration with the world renowned Babson College Entrepreneurial program and also our latest successful world class Knowledge Management and Innovation Management programs.
Like what they say that all good things must come to an end, Dr. Mathana is saying good bye from the presidency of Bangkok University after nearly 4 decades of dedication and tireless efforts to make Bangkok University the best in the private university system. I am sure that her courage and leadership during her final 6 years will always be our inspiration and guiding lights and I am most certain that she will always be there for all of us if needed. We wish her all the best after her retirement and for a long life and good health. We sure will miss her smiling face and her impeccable contributions for Bangkok University. From all of us, we are grateful beyond words and want to say thank you for everything she has done to make Bangkok University such a great place to be.
The torch will now pass on to our fourth President Dr. Uttama Savanayana who has an outstanding career in both private and public sector. Before joining the public sector, he served as the Director of Business Development at GE Capital (Thailand), Dr. Uttama served as the Vice Minister at the Ministry of Commerce, Thailand. He had also previously held roles as Vice Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister, and as Adviser to the Minister of Finance. Dr. Uttama was also a member of the National State Enterprise Policy Committee and an investment-committee member of the state-owned Vayupak Investment Fund. I have utmost confidence in Dr. Uttama ability to lead our university to a new level of excellence with his unique perspective in business, politics and now to the academia as President of Bangkok University. His extensive knowledge, enthusiasm and rich experienced will energized the much needed energy to our faculty, staffs and our students. This is precisely what is needed in our increasingly interconnected and complex world of academic and businesses in the 21st century of electronic and technological convergence.

ผมเข้าทำงานที่มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2516 เป็นอาจารย์รุ่นน้อง ดร.มัทนา สานติวัตร หนึ่งปี อาจารย์ใหม่ที่เข้ารุ่นเดียวกับผมมีทั้งหมด 6 คน ช่วงเวลานั้นอาจารย์มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพมีไม่มากเหมือนปัจจุบันนี้ พวกเราจึงรู้จักและสนิทสนมกับ ดร.มัทนา สานติวัตร เป็นอย่างดี ในฐานะที่ท่านเป็นอาจารย์รุ่นพี่ พวกเราทุกคนเรียกท่านว่า “พี่ตุ่ม” ซึ่งผมเองก็เรียกท่านว่าพี่ตุ่มมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ ทั้งๆที่ท่านอายุน้อยกว่าผมหนึ่งปี
การทำงานร่วมกับพี่ตุ่มในหลายๆ ภารกิจที่มหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ ตั้งแต่เป็นอาจารย์ผู้สอนธรรมดา จนก้าวสู่ตำแหน่งต่างๆ จนถึงระดับอธิการบดี ผมเห็นความเป็นผู้นำของพี่ตุ่มมาตลอด เป็นพี่ที่ให้คำชี้แนะและแก้ปัญหาแก่น้องๆ แถบทุกเรื่องก็ว่าได้ เป็นคนที่มีความอดทนและใจเย็นในการฟังปัญหาต่างๆ ของเพื่อนร่วมงานทุกระดับ และเต็มใจที่ช่วยแก้ปัญหาเหล่านั้นให้สำเร็จลุล่วงไปด้วยดี พี่ตุ่มมีทักษะในการพูดจูงใจ ประนีประนอม ไกล่เกลี่ย ไม่หักหาญน้ำใจผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชา และหาทางออกที่ดีให้เสมอ จึงเป็นที่รักใคร่ของเพื่อนร่วมงานและผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชาทุกระดับ ทุกคนสบายใจที่ได้ร่วมปฏิบัติงานกับท่าน
พี่ตุ่มได้ทุ่มเทชีวิตและจิตใจในการทำงานให้กับมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ มีความรักและภักดีต่อองค์กรนี้เป็นอย่างยิ่ง สิ่งที่ได้ทำและปฏิบัติเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีกับเพื่อนร่วมงาน เป็นโชคดีของมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพที่มีบุคลากรที่มีคุณค่าเช่นนี้อยู่ในองค์กร และตลอดระยะเวลาที่พี่ตุ่มดำรงตำแหน่งอธิการบดี ได้นำพามหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพให้มีความเจริญก้าวหน้ายิ่งๆ ขึ้น อยู่ในระดับแนวหน้าของสถาบันอุดมศึกษาเอกชนในประเทศไทย
ในโอกาสที่พี่ตุ่มขอเกษียณอายุในวันที่ ๓๑ พฤษภาคม ๒๕๕๘ นี้ เพื่อต้องการเวลาทำหน้าที่ลูกที่ดีในการดูแลคุณแม่ให้มากยิ่งขึ้น ได้มีเวลาพักผ่อน ท่องเที่ยว และทำกิจกรรมที่ชอบในบั้นปลายชีวิต ถึงแม้พี่ตุ่มจะวางมือจากหน้าที่การงานไปแล้ว แต่พี่ยังอยู่ในความทรงจำของชาวมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพตลอดไป ขอให้พี่ตุ่มมีแต่ความสุขและสุขภาพที่แข็งแรงนะครับ
การได้ทำงานกับท่านอธิการ ในฐานะที่ดิฉันเป็นผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชา ขอเปิดใจพูด “from the bottom of my heart” ว่า ดิฉันซาบซึ้ง
และเป็นพระคุณอย่างสูงที่ได้มีโอกาสเรียนรู้งานจากท่าน และได้เห็นถึงแบบอย่างที่ดีในหลายๆด้าน ความมุ่งมั่นในการทำงาน
โดยไม่เห็นแก่ความเหน็ดเหนื่อย ลูกล่อลูกชนในการจัดการ การบริหารบุคคลให้เป็นไปตามเป้าหมาย ความมีน้ำใจกับลูกน้อง
เหนือสิ่งอื่นใดก็คือความเป็นผู้นำที่ส่งผลให้ ม.กรุงเทพ เจริญมาจวบจนทุกวันนี้ ท่านสามารถพูดโน้มน้าวคนให้ยอมรับและ
ปฏิบัติตามด้วยความเต็มใจโดยไม่จำเป็นต้องใช้ความขึงขังหรือแสดงถึงความเฉียบขาดให้เห็น
ท่านเป็น “เพชรน้ำหนึ่ง” ของชาวมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ:
กราบขอบพระคุณสำหรับทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง ขอบพระคุณท่านอธิการที่คอยชี้แนะและให้คำปรึกษา… ถ้าเลือกได้ ไม่อยากให้ท่านเกษียณ
แต่ก็เข้าใจ ท่านเสียสละมามากแล้ว ถึงเวลาที่ท่านจะทำอะไรได้อีกมากมายที่ใฝ่ฝัน…….
พี่ตุ่มคะ… May your dreams come true!!

ความประทับใจของดิฉันในความเป็นอาจารย์ของท่านอธิการบดี ดร. มัทนา สานติวัตร มีมาตั้งแต่ครั้งที่พบท่านสมัยที่ท่านยังศึกษาอยู่ที่ University of Kansas พี่ ๆ น้อง ๆ นักศึกษาไทยทุกคนพูดเป็นเสียงเดียวกันว่า ถ้าอยากเป็นอาจารย์สอนหนังสือให้ปรึกษาพี่ตุ่ม ตราบจนทุกวันนี้ที่ดิฉันได้เป็นอาจารย์สอนหนังสือมาร่วม 30 ปี ก็ยังคงได้รับความแนะนำ สั่งสอนจากท่านอธิการบดีมาตลอด ท่านเป็นตัวอย่างของคุณครูที่ให้ความรู้ ความเมตตาต่อศิษย์ เป็นพี่ที่ดูแลเอาใจใส่สั่งสอนน้อง ๆ และเป็นผู้บริหารที่เสียสละรอบรู้ เป็นแบบอย่างแก่คณาจารย์รุ่นหลัง จึงจะขอเรียนอาจารย์ว่าดิฉันภูมิใจจริง ๆ ที่ได้เป็นหนึ่งในทีมงานของมหาวิทยาลัยกรุงเทพ ภายใต้การนำของท่านอธิการบดี ดร. มัทนา สานติวัตร
